Extremely Large-Scale Antenna Arrays: The next generation of wireless communications, sensing, and security

CLASSIC investigates extremely large-scale antenna arrays (ELSAAs) as a foundation for next-generation wireless communications, networking, sensing, and security.

Supported by a $15 million award from the U.S. Army Research Office, CLASSIC brings together researchers from physics to electrical engineering to investigate the underlying physics, develop new theory and models, demonstrate proof-of-concept applications, and build the hardware to test these ideas in practice. We connect fundamental research directly to experimental systems.
 

The Challenge

As antenna arrays grow to unprecedented scales, conventional approaches become insufficient. New electromagnetic effects, array interactions, propagation phenomena, and system-level constraints must be re-evaluated. CLASSIC develops the theoretical and engineering foundations needed to understand these effects and turn them into new capabilities.
 

The Future of Wireless

Wireless technology has become fundamental to modern life, supporting healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, and everyday work and entertainment. As our reliance on wireless systems grows, so does the need for technologies that can scale and operate reliably. CLASSIC aims to develop new technologies that can improve how systems communicate and sense their surroundings while making them more robust and secure.
